What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small prosthetics made of titanium and placed within the jawbone to serve as the foundation for a fully restored smile. Delivering the same bone stimulation as natural tooth roots, dental implants fuse with the bone and support custom restorations that fill in the spaces left behind by missing teeth. They’re known to last decades or a lifetime with regular maintenance and are the closest alternative to natural teeth.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process consists of four steps: the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and the placement of abutments, and the delivery of the final restoration. Although each patient’s treatment plan will look different, these four steps will be followed:

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – You and one of our qualified dentists will discuss your medical history and oral health during a consultation. Digital imaging of your oral and facial structures will allow for further examination of your jawbone to determine if you require additional treatments before receiving dental implants.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Using a surgical guide created by our in-house 3D printer, our implant dentist will place each post into its designated location along the jawbone to ensure the appropriate depth and maximum support.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After the surgery is complete, you will return home to recover. Osseointegration will take 4-6 months to complete, as this is the process of your dental implants fusing with your jawbone. Once you’re fully healed, you’ll receive the metal abutments, which help to connect your restoration to your implants.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – A few weeks following the placement of your abutments, you will receive your custom restoration. Crafted using impressions taken of your smile, your crown, bridge, or denture will be secured in place on top of your implants to create a full, complete smile.
